Adler had a date

Most of Adler's friends* are boys but few weeks ago Adler had a little girl, Erin, over for a play date. As you can see from the big grin on his face, he's a natural with the ladies and pretty happy about the coed company.

But sadly, like all men, he's easily distracted by toys and shiny objects.

* to the extent that a 5 month old can have "friends" - generally they are little brothers of LT's friends.

Sooool Fundraiser

LT's preschool is a cooperative. Co-ops generally have lower tuition but require significantly more direct involvement from parents. For example, just in the last week Kari and I have spent as much time at the school as LT has - Kari helped out in the classroom today and last weekend we all went as a family and cleaned the whole school (ok, it's basically a one room school house but it still took a couple hours).

I like the idea behind the co-op. The parent involvement not only help keeps costs down but also helps build a sense of community among the families and reinforces to the kids that education is something we value.

Unfortunately the nature of the time commitment required by a co-op means that, for the most part, the kids come from families with a stay at home parent which, in turn, sort of self selects a particular socioeconomic group to the school.

The last parent requirement of the co-op, which is fundraising, along with that socioeconomic situation is where it gets a little hard for me. I mean, it's a good and legitimate cause - his school is a licensed non-profit and I think you'd be hard pressed to argue that education, even the earliest years, isn't important. But it's certainly not a needy cause and I have a hard time asking people to contribute to a school where most of the families find themselves comfortably in the middle class.

All of that is a long way of saying that I'm not *asking* for anything but am letting all you loyal readers out there know that we are selling raffle tickets for LT's little school (we've even got a quota to fill!). If you'd like to buy a ticket or two, that's be wonderful and we'll be thankful, but I didn't want to put anyone in the position of feeling bad about saying no.

Lucky for me, Kari was the one in our family who did the hard work and managed to scrounge up some great donations for the raffle. She got a gift card to Tenn Street, our local coffee shop, a massage from her cousin Cierra who is amazing, and her mom knitted a couple of cute baby hats.

Other prizes include $1000, $500 and $250 cash as well as "restaurant and spa gift certificates, sports items, and a wide variety of goods and services from local merchants."

Tickets are $5 each and the raffle is on March 13th at Gumbo's downtown but you do NOT need to be present to win. Please let me know, if you'd like to get in on the action!

This kid clearly needs school but he doesn't have a job to pay for it yet.

Boys and Cars

The boys both woke up late this morning, which normally is a dream for Brian and I. Today, however, we were in a rush to get everyone ready to see a good friend of mine who is in town. LT was entertaining himself with his cars on the floor when all of a sudden Adler was crying and upset. I couldn't figure out what he needed, he wasn't tired or hungry. LT handed him a car and Adler was happy. I guess all he wanted was to play cars like his brother, I should have known.
Adler carried the car all the way to the Market to meet my friend.
The cement truck was a hit because the middle part actually rolls.
Adler eyeing what cars LT has. From the look on LTs face, you would think he was hording the cars from his brother, but LT loves sharing with Adler and "making him happy".

Pedicure anyone?

You never know what your kid might do when they grow up. Endless possibilities. LT has one skill at least, sticker pedicures!

Adler and his buddies

Baby Jonah and his brother Isaac. Jonah is just 2 weeks younger than Ads.
MC and Jonah. What a happy baby (and mama!)
Holden and Adler (yes, Holden is being held by me and Adler is being held by Brandy). I think they are starting to notice each other!
Brandy described Holden as just "melting" into you. There is no better way to describe this mellow baby. He melts into you. Such a snuggle buggle.
And then there is Adler. He literally tries to JUMP out of your arms!

Ready for digging at the park

The cold weather doesn't stop a boy from digging in sand at the park. You just have to wear a little more gear.

Adler's first solids

Adler has been eyeing my food for some time now. He also grabs things, constantly. LT and I decided (for no good reason) that today was the day to give him rice cereal for the first time. LT helped me pick out some rice cereal from the store a week ago. When we got home, I realized that it was rice cereal with apples. If this was LT, I really would have worried and probably not given it to him, but since Adler is the second kid, he got rice cereal with apples instead of just plain rice cereal. I figured if he had a reaction, there are only two ingredients that could be causing the allergy. LT chose Adler's spoon color (red) for the first food. He got out a special bowl for Adler and the cereal and helped me make it. Adler loved just being in the chair.
His face after the first bite. Not nearly as bad as LTs facial expression when he ate solids for the first time.
I guess I was too slow at feeding him because he grabbed the spoon and began feeding himself, pretty accurately too.
Wondering where all the food was and how to get some more.
Once again, these two boys are different. I think Adler ate more in his first sitting than LT ate the whole first month of giving him food.

GAK!

I've said this a million times, but teaching preschool was by far my favorite job. I taught 3-5 year olds and had a blast every day. I can't say that for any other job I have ever had. I absolutely love infants, and 1 year olds, but now that LT is at a preschool age and I can do some of the fun activities I did while teaching preschool. Gak has to be my favorite gooey substance to make and play with.
Its a combination of elmers glue, water and borax. Its not messy, yet stretches and can be manipulated. It also is a wonderful tool for fine motor development of little fingers. For some reason, every kid I have met, loves playing with the stuff with jewels put in it. LT was no exception.
And after an hour of just jewels and gak he asked what else he could put in the stuff. We took out a car and that entertained him for another half hour before dinner.I couldn't get him to look up, even for a second to take a picture.

Making My First "balemtimes"

I am not a huge fan of the hallmarking of holidays and all the junk that comes along with them. When I hadn't heard anything about LTs school exchanging valentines, I was a bit relieved. However, just yesterday, 3 days before his class, we were notified that, in fact, he needed to bring one for each child. I wasn't about to go buy Spongebob or Elmo valentines just to waste paper. But... I did decide that I would let LT create an art project (still wasting, yes I realize, but more fun). I have to admit that watching his eyes light up as he made his "balemtimes" was a pretty cute moment. So, my anger turned into a fun time as a mama.

Pizza PARTAY!

LTs friend, Joe and his mom, Shannon, had a pizza making party today. She had homemade dough, place mats and rolling pins for each child. The kids were supposed to bring their favorite topping. LT and I went to Whole Foods the other morning and when I asked him what he wanted to bring for a topping he said without thought, "MUSHROOMS". So, thats what we brought.
First you have to roll out the dough. Each child had a rolling pin to use.
Sadie, pressing down the dough before rolling again.
Joe rolling his out nice and flat.
Ewan doing the same.
And then there is LT. Rather than using the rolling pin, he found a plow and decided that was a better tool to roll out the dough with. I can't argue with his thought process. And the final product. A long oval shaped pizza with a little sauce, a little cheese and a mountain of mushrooms, tomatoes and basil piled on one side. It was one of the tastier pizzas I have ever had.

Photo Shoot

I subjected the boys to yet another amateur hour photo shoot on the morning of Superbowl Sunday.

Brown B
Brown B even got his turn.

baby smile
Baby smiles are the best!

baby foot
He's getting bigger but his little feet are still pretty cute.

baby and his foot
Apparently I'm not the only one that finds baby feet entertaining.

school picture?
As far as I'm concerned, this can pass for a school picture. Save a few bucks on that one. I mean, that is if you don't count the thousands of dollars of camera and computer equipment.

candid smile
Here's a real smile out of LT. I was lucky to catch this before he decided to smile for the camera.

smile for the camera
Because a two and a half year old smiling for the camera looks like this. Nice, eh?

TV
Trying to get the boys to sit together and look at the camera but the only thing they'd look at was the TV. At least it was football.

honk
"Honk."
I'm afraid I may have unintentionally taught LT this fun party trick.

hugs
"Brothers don't shake hands. Brothers gotta hug."

So yeah, I put my boys in matching train sweaters and tried to coerce them into sitting together for pictures. Fatherhood changes a man...

Little guy in a big bed

We took a picture of LT about this age in our old king size bed. Now we have a queen, but Adler still looks pretty small in our bed.

My three boys

Doing what boys do best... sitting in front of the TV.

Proof I've got a toof

Its his bottom right, although just this morning we found his second one, bottom left. The kid isn't even 5 months yet.

Brothers

Playing on the floor together.
One of my favorite times of day is when the boys first wake up. Adler usually wakes up before LT. When we hear LT, we head into his bed and the boys love just playing together on LTs bed for a few minutes. One of the first things out of LTs mouth each morning is, "Where is Adyar? I need to give him a hug and a kiss". I love seeing them smile and laugh together.

Keeping us on our toes

Adler is constantly trying to wrestle his way out of things. I never once buckled LT into a bouncy chair or stroller. I would put him high on counters in the bouncy chair and never once worried that he would get himself out of them. LT never tried to pry his way out of a stroller either. Adler is teaching us why those straps are put there. I have a bouncy chair in our bathroom so that I can shower and leave him there. I happened to, luckily, look out one morning (when he was just weeks old) and he had almost wriggled his way out of the bouncy. From that day on, both Brian and I strap him in.
The Bumbo chairs (pictured in these photos) don't have straps. We put this chair on counters and tables with LT, but I wouldn't dare do that with Adler. These pictures were with him on the floor, and me watching. As you can see, he is trying his best to get out of it, and he almost did.
Parenting would be pretty boring if the second kid was the same as the first, but you don't know any different. Adler sure keeps us on our toes, constantly. I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg too.
Using his arms as best he can to push his body up and out.Trying the other direction, maybe this way will work better.
Taking a rest and devising a new plan to get out of it.
