Santa Train

Our nephew/cousin is very into trains and so my brother and sister in law planned a trip up to Georgetown to take the Santa train to celebrate his 2nd birthday today.  We were lucky to have both of his sets of grandparents join him.
 Our little fam.
The santa aboard the train was one of the most respectful and gentle santas I have seen.  He said multiple times to all the kids, "You do not have to sit on my lap" and "Your parents teach you to be weary of strangers, you can tell me from afar what you would like for Christmas if you don't feel comfortable".  Some kids felt more comfortable, others didn't and either way was fine with him.

Wes was pretty unsure about Santa, but he was so interested in his big cousins that he followed them over to see Santa.
This cute bundle slept the whole day carried by his dad.

The elves gave out candy canes and bells, a highlight for Adler.

So much love

"Take a picture of me doing mindfulness"

One of the many things I love about Alder's class is that they incorporate mindfulness practice into their school day. Adler was helping (sort of) me setup the little home studio to take some family photos later in the day when he suddenly insisted that I take a picture of him "doing mindfulness." I was happy to oblige and got one serous and one smiling. I like the former but he prefers the latter because his "hands are right." Seems he's still got some room to grow on the nonjudgmental piece.

LT

Watching a magic show in the evening at the conference I was at during our trip to Southern California in June.

scratch

Here's Adler playing a computer maze game that LT made with Scratch. My job is computer programing (well, sort of anyway) and yet I'm still kind of amazed by this.

bedtime (again)

I think I'm just a sucker for the big brother reading to his little brothers before bed.

Elsie's birthday

October 29th was the first anniversary of the day we learned of Elsie’s death and together we'd decided on a few things to do that day to honor and remember her. After school we wrote short messages to her and tied them onto pink helium balloons, which we let float away from our back yard. Afterwards we walked to the botanic gardens to visit the tree dedicated to her. While at the gardens we also walked around to some favorite spots, including a roll down the grass by the big boys. Perhaps such playful antics seem antithetical to the somber idea of honoring our dead daughter but, to me, they're representative of exactly why we chose the gardens as a place to commemorate her. Going to the gardens has always been a nice thing for us to do and enjoy together as a family and now, even if only symbolically, Elsie can be there with us. We stopped at Shells and Sauce on the way home to have dinner together and little Blane slept though the whole thing.

It was not an easy day. But spending it together this way made it okay. And for that I am grateful.

I bought the pink balloons earlier that day at King Soopers. The women helping me nicely asked what we were celebrating, presumably expecting a little girl's party or some similarly happy event, and was clearly distraught when I told her. She pulled it together though and said she thought it was a nice idea as she filled and tied the three balloons. I walked to the checkout area and she kinda follow me at a distance, which was a little odd but kind of brushed aside (later feeling guilty about even the brief thought that passed though my own mind that she might think I was going to steal them). As I was about to pay, however, she jumped in front of me and payed for the balloons. Maybe it was just a little thing, a few dollars for some balloons, but I was really touched by the gesture that made a very human connection at a moment when it was particularly meaningful.

Lucky baby

I think Blane scored when it came to brothers.  The big guys are so good with him.

Musical Morning

Ads class had "Musical Morning" this morning.  I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but once again was very impressed with his class.  If you wanted to sign up to sing or play an instrument, you could.  The teachers then celebrated each kids talent by calling them up one by one to perform.  Some of the highlights were a kindergartener who sang "What does the Fox Say", several kiddos playing the keyboard, a past student who sung "One Day" and a mom even stood up and sang "Over the Rainbow".

His teachers have been begging me to let them hold Blane, but the timing hasn't been right until today.  Either they were busy teaching, he was sleeping or he was at home, but today they finally had the chance!

Marin also has been asking almost daily to hold him.
This mom was a performing arts major and sure was talented.

A bike date

LT and I had a date together earlier this week.  He planned a bike ride on the bumps at Cheeseman park (Blane came too, but slept in the stroller while I ran) and then to visit Elsie's tree.

Middle Middle date

Adler and I are both a middle child, so we have named our dates together "middle middle dates".  He planned this weekends date and needless to say, he chose a sugary breakfast.  We went to the Fractured Prune which is a make your own donut place.  He ordered two, one with honey frosting topped with mini marshmallows and bronco colored sprinkles.  The second was mint frosting with chocolate chips.

Any Given Sunday

Every Sunday I put him in a little Broncos outfit in the morning and every Sunday he's spit up (or worse) on it enough by game time that he has to wear something else. Will today be any different?

The Soccer Team

Adler's first (and quite possibly last) soccer season is in the books.

A Boulder kind of day

These four boys took their little brothers on a hike in Boulder last weekend.  It was all fun and games until we saw, not one but TWO rattle snakes!  Apparently there was a third on the trail ahead of where we turned around quickly.  Blane slept through all the excitement.

We stopped at Beau Jo's on the way home for pizza.

Most babies don't like tummy time, but this kid just goest to sleep.
Seconds before falling asleep.
